Truck Drivers Who Inspire Me

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

I found this article online this morning that inspired me to keep living even when I’m 90 years old.  Al Weidtz, a retired trucker, is riding his bike in the “Wheeling Heritage Trail Bicycle Tour” for the fourth straight year.  He rides his bike about a 100-miles a week, can you believe it?

His history is interesting enough.  He served in the 28th Airborne Tank Battalion in World War II and came home, married Rose and they operated a trucking company they named “Roaming Rosie”.  They traveled the country together as well as staying physically active.  They boated, did skin diving, and even archery.  They had a wonderful life together.  When Rosie passed away, he moved and made new friends.  Now he has taken up biking.

Al loves to bike with his children and grandchildren.  Last year, he, his daughter, and grandson, rode the Columbus Ohio Zoo ride along with 4,500 other people.  He fell, but only scraped his knee.  He got up and finished the race!

When truck driving, Al and Rosie Weidtz’ “Roaming Rosie” trucks were known as the “Knights of the Road” and traveled though out all of the United States.  Back in 1959, they travelled from the Ohio area to the New York City and back, making a whole $100 a trip.  Times have definitely changed.

People have such interesting stories and finding this article this morning has reminded me to live.  I may sit in a cab and see the scenery, but this reminds to get out of my cab once in awhile and enjoy what I see.  Maybe I’ll take up biking someday and since I’m not quite 90 yet, I could try 200 miles a week.  Nah, I’ll stick with 5 to start out.

Stimulus Dollars Helping People Get Training

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

So, I’m looking at articles out there that I can relate to and I found this great one out of  Washington State about the stimulus dollars helping people get Truck Driving Jobs and become a Truck Driver.  The part that really struck me was that there seems to be a shift out there in trades that are no longer out there going to new technology.  Training is needed for a lot of people who has a skill that is no longer out there.  In this article called “Stimulus Funds to Spark New Careers”, it reports that because community colleges in the area are in need of a lot of money, that Tacoma-Pierce County Workforce Development Council used $1.4 million of the stimulus dollars for community college courses so that vital classes in courses would not be cut. The council also created programs to help in the cost of new training, which included truck driving.

A man’s story, which was so great it goes as follows:

“One student taking advantage of the help is Lokeni, who was laid off from his offshore oil drilling job in October.

Lokeni, 27, is now in his fourth week of a six-month commercial truck-driving program at Bates Technical College.

He said he tried to find work in the oil industry, but no one was hiring. When he researched training programs for truck driving, he thought he couldn’t afford them, he said.

“When I first found out I got into this program, I was on my knees thanking God,” said Lokeni, who lives in Parkland with his wife and 5-year-old daughter. “Job security to take care of my family – that’s what it’s all about.”

Truck driving has great job security and will be around for years to come and it won’t go away with technology.  One of the reasons I’m a truck driver.

CDL Jobs Pay Better With Good Fuel Economy

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

CDL jobs can pay really good. Your income can exceed $40,000 per year depending on how you manage your expenses. Your  income can be significantly effected by poor fuel economy. We decided to post a list of things you can do to minimize fuel waste and increase your fuel economy. Following these suggestions will give you the opportunity to keep more of your income in your pocket.

The areas we have identified as good ways to increase fuel economy are limiting your speed,  RPM management, idle reduction, equipment maintenance, and staying on route.

Limiting your speed:

Every 5 miles per hour you slow down will give you an extra ½ mile per gallon. Set your cruise around sixty instead of 65 and you’ll see a savings.

RPM Management:

Maintaining good smooth acceleration and smooth deceleration will keep you under 1800 RPM. The fewer miles you drive at higher RPM’s the better mileage you will get and this will make your CDL jobs pay better in the long run.

Keep Idle Times To A Minimum:

Ignore that old wives tail that says starting and stopping the engine burns more fuel than idling and you will save some serious money. It is just a myth.

Regular Maintenance:

A well-maintained tractor burns less fuel so keep up on your maintenance. Regular tire pressure checks and air filter checks will keep your equipment running efficiently. Poor tire pressure and air filters can create poor fuel economy quickly.

Staying on Your Route:

Staying on route assures you that you get paid for the miles you drive. Think twice before taking that detour for personal reasons and you’ll drive fewer non-paid miles.

Following the advice above will help you run a more profitable business for yourself., and keep more money in your bank account. CDL Jobs are exciting. Visit our trucking company website for information about the CDL Jobs we have open.

Don’t Settle For The “New Normal”

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

dreamstime_2567795The Toronto star wrote a brief article that discussed the issue of job insecurity that is weeping the world over. Employers in both already developed markets and emerging economies are turning to temporary workers, part time workers, even just contracting with employees. The phrase many commentators are using to describe this new labor management strategy is the “New Normal”

Most businesses do this so that they can remain nimble and avoid major expenses if the company needs to cut employees of the payroll. For people interested in cdl jobs and the jobs truck drivers do, the trucking industry can be an alternative to this “New Normal.”

The Toronto Star also discussed that this new phenomena is most likely going to continue and that many jobs that were thought to be permanent will not be coming back when the economy recovers. That is very important to to consider if your thinking you’ll just get another job in the same field when the economy recovers.

Trucking companies are always trying to fill their open cdl jobs . The industry in general is always on the list of good places to get a job if your looking for a career that is in high demand. There is no doubt that CR England fits into that. The company is always trying to hire great people.

Stay off the “New Normal” bandwagon and look into cdl jobs with an industry leader that hasn’t laid off a truck driver in its 90-year history.

Make A Truck Job Your New Career Path

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

WKYC.com Cleveland ran a great story about a man who recently choose a truck job as his new career path. The beginning of the article told a a depressing tale of a man applying for 327 jobs and not being able to find a job.

Then he found a truck driving job. His training for the school he is attending will last 4 weeks. Then he will be ready to find employment.

Truck driving jobs have become a new career path for many individuals who were laid off from previous professions.

How is this for the job outlook!

According to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, there is going to be up to 350 annual job openings in he next five to seven years for truck drivers in the Cleveland, Mentor and Elyria areas. That is an estimate for just 3 cities. That would put the national number somewhere around 350,000 job openings annualy if the number held up across the board.

Trucking is a great profession to get into. Check out our company website for more information about CR England cdl training and current job openings.
