As a truck driver, it is important to know your roads. You need to know things such as where you are, if there are roads with restrictions, and if there are any truck stops between you and your destination. Often times, you are driving through areas you have never been before, so you are unfamiliar with your surroundings. While driving through new places, it is easy to get lost, and instead of pulling over and thumbing through maps to find out where you are, try receiving audible step-by-step directions to just about anywhere. How can you do this? Through GPS (Global Positioning System).

There are many different GPS devices out there and many of them have different features. There are devices designed to assist businessmen, devices that are focused on entertainment, and even some devices that are programmed to work specifically with truck driving. These devices come with features that can direct you around roads that have truck restrictions, to truck stops, and to restaurants around your location. To provide an example of these devices, below are two examples of GPS devices designed specifically for truckers.

The first device is the Rand McNally TND 710. This GPS system has an application specifically designed for truckers. This application has features including truck routing with truck specific roads, state mileage recording that can be exported for easier reporting, on duty & driving timers, traffic predictor that integrates historic traffic patterns into routing and much, much more. This system will make your trucking job much easier as it directs you to wherever you want to go.

The second GPS system is the Garmin dezl 560LMT Trucking Navigator. This system was designed specifically for truckers and is loaded with great features to assist you on the road. This GPS system provides updates for traffic and maps for the lifetime of the device, where some other devices require the updates be purchased. This system will allow you to track your driving hours and will provide a warning when you are getting close to HOS violations. You will be provided with updates on surrounding destinations such as weights stations and truck stops, and you can even send and receive phone calls if you have a Bluetooth capable cell phone.

With technology making leaps and bounds, it is no wonder that there are GPS devices with such great features. The life of a truck driver is definitely made easier by these navigation systems and all we have to wonder now, is what will they come up with next?

Goodyear Highway Hero Award

April 27th, 2011

When deciding to be a truck driver, do you think that someday you could save a life? Neither did the four finalists of the 28th Goodyear North America Highway Hero award. However, that’s exactly what they did. The four finalists, Jamie Avitia, Tiden Curl, Bill Howard, and David Nelson, each saved a life during the year 2010 while out on the road.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company North America Highway Hero Program was started in 1983 to bring the truck driving industry into a positive light. With a concern that truck driving jobs were getting a bad rep, the award was though of as a way to show the public that there are plenty of truck drivers with a great moral standard and that have a positive influence on the North American community.

Each year applicants for the award are sent in from the general public, emergency response services, trucking companies, and other sources from all over the United States and Canada. When the time to present the award comes, the applicants are narrowed down to four finalists, and a winner will eventually be chosen from those four finalists.

This year each of the finalists completed heroic tasks that resulted in the saving of a life. The first nominee, Jamie Avitia, was driving on I-10 in Texas when he witnessed a speeding pickup truck crash into a concrete drainage culvert and flip into the air. Avitia immediately ran to the scene of the crash and noticed the driver laying unconscious in the back seat, having flown from the drivers seat during the crash. The man had no pulse, and Avitia immediately began to administer CPR. After a few minutes, the man began to breathe again and Avitia was able to administer first-aid until the paramedics arrived.

The second nominee, Tiden Curl, witnessed a car driving on Highway 99 in California loose control and crash into a set of railroad tracks. After an elderly woman ran out of the passenger’s side, curl noticed a train was coming and ran to the driver’s side of the car where he found the driver unconscious. After unlocking the door through the window, Curl was able to pull the driver from the car seconds before the train pummeled through the vehicle, leaving behind nothing but a pile of twisted metal.

Bill Howard is the third nominee and is nominated for coming to the aid of a woman after she fell asleep and ran into his truck on Highway 2 in Nebraska. The woman was critically injured with broken legs and an arm that as partially severed. Howard was able to keep his cool and used a shirt as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding when a pair of firemen on their way to a training class came to his aid.

The fourth nominee is David Nelson, and is nominated for coming to the aid of a woman calling for help on the side of I-20 in Alabama when other drivers simply drove by. The woman had run into a road sign and had her seven-year-old daughter unconscious in the back seat. The woman also informed Nelson that her daughter suffered from a heart condition. Nelson had been a certified EMT for 25 years and knew exactly what to do. He quickly placed the young girl on the ground and began CPR until the paramedics arrived. Because of Nelson’s quick thinking, the girl was able to survive the ordeal and is now a healthy young child.

The winner of the 28th Goodyear North America Highway Hero award will receive a 10,000 U.S. Savings Bond, a plaque and a specially designed ring; the other finalists will receive a $5,000 U.S. Savings Bond and plaque. The finalists are presented at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, KY. The winner of the award will be presented at the Truck Writers of North America Annual Banquet.

Japanese Trucking Company Hit Hard by Earthquake

March 22nd, 2011

Trucking Company Building in JapanLike a bad nightmare, Japan and her people are living an unrealistic life right now. One man, age 65, has his own, personal story. There was an article in nbc29.com called “Scenes of devastation at heart of Japan disaster” by Jay Alabaster that told this sad story.

In a little trucking company, the 65-year old owner named Yoshio Miura, sat in his office on the afternoon of the big quake. He quickly got under the table. Above that table were cabinets made out of metal, which fell on top of the table he was under. His office furniture and supplies were scattered everywhere. Yoshio Miura expressed himself about how the building shook side to side and lifted a shed off its foundation outside his office. After the earthquake came the tsunami. Coming inland 6 miles, it went through his office. Luckily, the 65-year old trucking company owner had warning and was safe from the water.

Yoshio and other trucking company owners are in for an uphill battle for the next few months. We hope their struggles will turn into success stories as they pick up the pieces and start over. We here in the United States feel for those caught up in this tragedy.

At CR England, the corporate office is accepting donations from their employees to send to these victims. The CR England will match the donations, which will double the help toward our neighbors across the sea. As a very giving company, they are broken hearted as the rest of us and want to help in rebuilding their lives.

About CR England:
CR England was created in 1920, more than 90 years ago. With a reputation as one of the nation’s leading refrigerated trucking companies, their focus is on integrity, quality of product as well as customer service. With services in Intermodal, Dedicated, Long Haul and Regional freight, they are located in North America and South America.
