As a truck driver, it is important to know your roads. You need to know things such as where you are, if there are roads with restrictions, and if there are any truck stops between you and your destination. Often times, you are driving through areas you have never been before, so you are unfamiliar with your surroundings. While driving through new places, it is easy to get lost, and instead of pulling over and thumbing through maps to find out where you are, try receiving audible step-by-step directions to just about anywhere. How can you do this? Through GPS (Global Positioning System).
There are many different GPS devices out there and many of them have different features. There are devices designed to assist businessmen, devices that are focused on entertainment, and even some devices that are programmed to work specifically with truck driving. These devices come with features that can direct you around roads that have truck restrictions, to truck stops, and to restaurants around your location. To provide an example of these devices, below are two examples of GPS devices designed specifically for truckers.
The first device is the Rand McNally TND 710. This GPS system has an application specifically designed for truckers. This application has features including truck routing with truck specific roads, state mileage recording that can be exported for easier reporting, on duty & driving timers, traffic predictor that integrates historic traffic patterns into routing and much, much more. This system will make your trucking job much easier as it directs you to wherever you want to go.
The second GPS system is the Garmin dezl 560LMT Trucking Navigator. This system was designed specifically for truckers and is loaded with great features to assist you on the road. This GPS system provides updates for traffic and maps for the lifetime of the device, where some other devices require the updates be purchased. This system will allow you to track your driving hours and will provide a warning when you are getting close to HOS violations. You will be provided with updates on surrounding destinations such as weights stations and truck stops, and you can even send and receive phone calls if you have a Bluetooth capable cell phone.
With technology making leaps and bounds, it is no wonder that there are GPS devices with such great features. The life of a truck driver is definitely made easier by these navigation systems and all we have to wonder now, is what will they come up with next?
