The company has decided to cut more truck driving jobs as a way to get some slack from its lenders as it avoids bankruptcy. The lenders will certainly be glad to see the company getting leaner as it tries to survive the recession.

Company officials were quoted in an article by William B. Casidy of The Journal Of Commerce as saying, ” “The company continues to make workforce adjustments across the company in response to economic conditions affecting business volumes.”

The company, the largest nationwide LTL operator, didn’t say how many employees would be let go, “since workforce actions are still in process.” The layoffs will streamline decision-making and eliminate duplicate efforts and costs, the company said.

The recession has taken a heavy toll on YRCW as it has reported losses of over $575 million in the first half of 2009. The second quarter of 2009 was the worst so far as the company watched its revenue decline over 40%.

One highlight regarding remaining truck driving jobs at YRC is that lenders have begun to work with the company and are working with YRC to resolve some of its lending issues. This could be a sign of an end to the job cuts at YRCW.

The amount that employment for trucking companies dropped was 0.3 % seasonally adjusted. This information comes from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics and was released to the general public on September 4th, 2009.

The job losses of August bring the total number of Truck driving jobs lost so far this year just over 80,000, with a year over year number close to 130,000 jobs lost.

Since the pace of total jobs lost is slowing, this could be sign the we are on the right road to getting a recovery. Certainly we are not out of the woods yet. And having a jobs number that says the industry is still shedding jobs is proof of that. But overall if this is the last job loss number we see for a while, could mean that as freight increases, trucking companies will need to hire once again to keep pace with demand.

Not all trucking companies are singing the same tune as YRC. Recent Earnings updates from a couple of large trucking carriers seem to be better than those above. For example, Con-way Inc. (CNW) recently posted their Second-quarter earnings and saw their stock price jump as much as 15%.

Across the market though, all types of transporters have been reporting significant volume declines. YRC has also suffered from volume declines.

The U.S. economic output has continued to shrink in the second quarter and this has created a tough market for companies like YRC . Many companies have had to cut a host of costs in addition to cutting jobs. It should also be noted that numbers show June Tonnage down as well. 

Well, not all companies are cutting jobs. CR England is certainly looking to hire drivers looking for truck driving jobs. Also, Truck Driving School Students can also apply for positions with the company. They are also looking to hire experienced drivers as well. CR England seems to be bucking the job cutting trend. In fact they have never laid off a single driver in their 89 year history.

We decided to throw up some practice questions so those with trucking jobs can get a feel for the types of questions that will be on the hazmat exam. If your current truck job doesn’t require hazmat maybe down the road you may still want to get some training. You can use these questions to gauge how well you already know the material and see if you should study up before you take the test in your state.

4. When you need to stop for railroad tracks, how many feet before the tracks should you stop?
5. Should stop before railroad tracks if your hauling 110 gallons of Chlorine?

We hope these simple sample questions provide a good example fo the types of information needed to pass the hazmat endorsement test.
